The Lewis Chess Pieces

On display at the National Museum of Scotland, the Lewis Chess Pieces are a collection of twelve, hand-crafted medieval chess pieces, believed to date back to the 12th century. Found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, the pieces were likely brought to Scotland from Norway by Scandinavian settlers. Similar pieces are used in the chess game in ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’.
