In 1838, the 78th Highlanders returned to Edinburgh Castle after a long posting in Sri Lanka with an elephant in tow. While staying at the castle the elephant soon developed a taste for beer and used to reach its trunk through the canteen window for a taste of his favourite ale. The animals toes are now displayed in the National War Museum within the castle.
