Whaligoe Steps zigzag down the 250ft cliff face to give you access to Whaligoe Haven. When the Haven was used for herring fishing local women would carry the herring in baskets up the steps.
The journey down is spectacular but remember you will need to climb back up them as the only other way to access and leave the haven is by boat. Make sure everyone in your group has a head for heights too as there is only a low wall at the seaward side most of the way down and at the bottom it disappears completely leaving you feeling very exposed. Worth the effort though. Look out for wild flowers by the side of the steps and seabirds all around.
These steps are not easy to find…from Wick turn left at the phone box at Occumster…continue past the houses to the car park. To your left at the car park is a drive leading to a house. You will see a sign at this driveway. Walk up the driveway and around the house until you see a garage door. The start of the steps is along by the wall to the right of this garage door.
