Glencoe Lochan

Set in the grounds of the former home of the Earl of Strathcona, Glencoe Lochan is a swathe of conifer forest in one of the most idyllic settings imaginable. Reputedly, the earl – who was the governor-general of Canada for a time – created the wood to ease his Canadian wife’s homesickness, and certainly there is more than a passing resemblance between Glencoe Lochan and Lake Louise in Alberta. The tranquil lochan is enveloped by the woodland, with towering mountains forming a stunning backdrop that is perfectly reflected in the clear waters.

Glencoe Lochan is an ideal hiking territory, with several graded walking routes to suit visitors of all abilities. The least demanding route takes you around the edge of the lochan along even ground that is suitable for wheelchairs, with several picnic benches offering a peaceful place to absorb the
outstanding scenery, feed the ducks or capture some memorable photographs.

The more challenging trails zigzag through the woodland along undulating paths or head steeply uphill to give impressive views over Loch Leven, and the mountains of Beinna’ Bheithir and the Pap of Glencoe.
