NextGlasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art is situated in the heart of the city, in Royal Exchange Square. Since its opening in 1996, it has become Scotland’s most visited art gallery, with several million people passing through its doors and admiring the contemporary artwork within. But before you even set foot inside, visitors and passers by alike are struck with the beauty of the building itself – a Neoclassical former townhouse, belonging to Glasgow tobacco lord William Cunninghame, constructed in 1778. It has since been used as the Royal Bank of Scotland, Royal Exchange, and to house Stirling’s library collection. Today, it boasts exhibits including works by Andy Warhol and David Hockney, among many others.
