Although used as a manor home more than a fortress, Edzell Castle is no less magnificent for it. In fact, the rarity of military action means that much more of Edzell survives than other, more martial structures. The striking red sandstone tower overlooks a gorgeous Renaissance garden which is the only one of its kind in Scotland. What makes Edzell so unique is its esoteric symbology, especially in the planting of the garden. Scholars have many interpretations of this mystery – from disciples of Tycho Brahe to early followers of Rosicrucianism – yet the truth remains elusive.
