Sprung on the unsuspecting town in 2016, reviews for Elgin’s now-infamous Dandy Lion statue include “cultural and intellectual vomit in technicolour” – and that was from a town councillor! Looming over the downtown area at ten feet tall, the statue depicts a Cronenberg-Esque amalgam of a bearded lion and a mermaid clutching a walking cane. With a backdrop of Elgin’s historical town centre, the Dandy Lion is as baffling as it is undeniably fascinating. Having recovered from the initial shock, the community has slowly begun to warm to the creature, and a trip to Elgin is incomplete without at least a brief glimpse at the mesmerising work.
