Craigmillar Castle

Craigmillar Castle which stands 5 miles south of the centre of Edinburgh, is a ruined medieval castle which was once used as a safe haven for Mary Queen of Scots.

This 15th century stronghold is walking distance from Princes street yet seems worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Full of atmosphere, this epic castle is a wonderful escape from the city, you can climb one of Scotland’s oldest tower houses and admire the stunning views across Edinburgh.

It’s also been used in the filming of the series Outlander as it appears as Ardsmuir Prison in the third season of the TV series based upon author Diana Gabaldon’s historical time travel book.
