Old Calton Burial Ground is the resting place of some of the greatest figures in Scottish history, including philosopher David Hume and the family of Robert Louis Stevenson. However, this watchtower overlooking the site is also of historical interest. In the 1820s, the practise of body snatching, where criminals stole corpses and sold them to anatomy schools, was commonplace. This watchtower was constructed to deter the thieves.
