CLIMBING SGURR AN FHIDHLEIR

By Pete Elliott

Sgurr an Fhidhleir is located in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland in the Coigach area of Ross and Cromarty. Driving towards it from Assynt to the north, you’d be forgiven for thinking its a steep technical climb due to the dramatic cliff face and sheer drop visible. However the true ascent is from the south near Culnacraig, and is a fairly gentle moor walk to the summit at 705m. The reward is surreal, grand vistas over Assynt with the jutting peaks of Stach Pollaidh and Suilven capturing the last rays light visible in the distance. This area of Scotland really does possess some of the most majestic mountains visible anywhere in the world and I can’t wait for my next adventure up north.
