There are a number of islands near Mull that are well worth visiting. Fingal’s Cave on the isle of Staffa is famous all over the world for its strange hexagonal basalt columns. It’s also of artistic interest, having featured in the works of a number of romantic poets and composers, such as James Macpherson (aka Ossian) and Mendelssohn. The Isle of Iona is another magical place that is also of great historical significance. Many Scottish kings are reportedly buried in ‘Reilig Òdhrain’ burial ground at ‘St Oran’s Chapel’, including Macbeth. More recently, in 1994 the labour politician John Smith was buried here. It’s also worth visiting the evocative Cairnburgh Castle, a ruined castle straddling the two Treshnish islands ‘Cairn na Burgh Mòr’ and ‘Cairn na Burgh Beag’. It is considered one of the most remote castles in the world.
Another island you might consider visiting is ‘Erraid’, the setting of Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Kidnapped’.
